Ankaran Cemetery – the art of peace and remembrance
The modernly designed cemetery in Ankaran is more than a place of farewell – it is a remarkable cultural landmark, awarded the Plečnik Prize 2025. It invites visitors to take quiet walks through a thoughtfully designed landscape park, nestled among pine trees, stone terraces, and sea views.
Recognised as one of the most beautiful examples of contemporary public space design in Slovenia, the cemetery blends landscape art, architecture, and a respectful relationship with its surroundings. Among pine trees and stone retaining walls, with views of the sea and sky, it creates a space of peace, silence, and reflection.
For its outstanding aesthetic and spatial quality, the cemetery was awarded the 2025 Plečnik Prize – Slovenia’s highest national award for architecture and public space design. The expert jury highlighted the subtle interplay of natural landscape, pathways, terraces, and the horizon.
A visit to the cemetery offers a unique experience: a walk through a modern park-like setting that transcends traditional notions of cemeteries. It is a place where architecture strips away the superfluous and emphasizes the essential – connection with space, nature, and tranquillity.
